Yeah. But fortunately, she wanted to be a good mother -- she just didn’t know how. (The classic example was when one of her children was depressed, and she wanted them to come do some errands for her…because she wanted to help them feel better, and she couldn’t imagine anything that would make them happier than doing something for her.) The ex in your story was clearly just interested in himself.
