Well, that particular stress ended when my dad died. I don't recommend that as a solution to stress. But the stress was from being in a bad situation, and being powerless to do anything substantive to change it. Other than self-care (eating well, getting enough sleep, etc.) and doing what I could to make little changes for the better (reading him his favorite book, getting a soft blanket to bring to the hospital, etc.), the biggest thing was remembering my greater purpose in being there. That helped alleviate the stress.
