We only have a limited band width of things we can care about. As one of my psychology professors was fond of saying, when all of the pressures of college life become overwhelming, go throw yourself into a snow bank. Pretty soon, you won't care about any of it. All you'll care about is getting warm.
9/11 was that snowbank for a lot of people. And many of them have never been truly "warm" (aka safe and comfortable) ever since.
