We often don't see the real details of a career until we're in it. I wrote for a small publisher instead of a big one, and, yes, that meant I missed out on the 5-figure advances. But my publisher organized book tours, putting us up in hotels and transporting us in the publisher's RV "party bus". That's the sort of attention a midlist author would never get from a big publisher.
