We had lovely laminate floors in Colorado. They were very sturdy. There was a layer of textured plastic on top of the wood. Unfortunately, they were water resistant, not water proof. When the kitchen wall sprang a leak, they had to be gutted. We got bamboo floors that were waterproof to replace them, and those were NOT sturdy. Fortunately, a little bit of wood oil hid most of the scrapes and scratches.
