Too old & too expensive is a curse. Even trying to change roles, and stating up-front I expected less, didn't matter. Their rationale was that I "should" make more, so I would resent them and not work as hard, plus leave as soon as I could. Plus, being over 40 is a legal hassle if they want to fire someone, so it's easier to never hire them.
