Those decisive moments seem to be unexpected, for the most part. Even for ones that you know may be coming (like my mom’s death — she was in hospice), their actual arrival is always a surprise. Longer term changes, like moving, have a much longer lead-up, so you can’t make as sharp a division between before/after. They’re more before/during/after. This essay was actually prompted by an unexpected good news phone call.
