This was one of the surprising findings in Angela Duckworth’s Grit. She found that people who were intrinsically motivated to develop skill in something did not “discover” their passion and life purpose. They actually created it. It was a byproduct of the time and intensity to develop mastery. So for a young person especially, the key was not if they “found" their life’s work, but was it something that became more interesting the longer they did it. If so, it was likely to lead to their life’s work. If not, it might be a hobby or enjoyable past time. But it wasn’t their “thing".
