This was a great piece, and a moving profile of an important cultural figure. I recall watching a documentary on PR -- it was interviewing a bunch of people there after a natural disaster, and trying to explain why the US wasn't supporting the people there the way it would if a state had a similar disaster. The laws that were put in place by the banking system are truly draconian and evil, existing for no reason other than to impoverish Puerto Ricans and enrich the bankers. Just because they could. Colonialization is wrong, no matter when it happens. It's not always easy to recover, and much of the colonial mindset is embedded in the culture, requiring a lot of effort to remove. (The island I live on now used to be a British colony, and they're still trying to eradicate the inequities.)
