This sounds remarkably like the explanation for unschooling I was given by one of my friends. Her son was brilliant academically, at least one full grade ahead of "standard", but was having all sorts of trouble emotionally and behaviorally, at least one full grade behind his agemates. Unschooling helped immensely, by letting him progress at his own rate in all the areas of his being.
