This is what happened to my co-worker’s cousin. He was reading some of his stuff at an open mic night. One of the people in the audience had a radio program, and asked him to read the material on air. One of the people listening to the radio program was a publisher, who asked him to write a book. He has since gone on to publish multiple NYT bestsellers. But I don’t think anyone else would tell newbies the best way to become a bestselling author is to read your stuff at coffee house open mic nights.
