That was the core principle of the Marie Kondo method -- our dressers and closets are filled with clothes we don't wear. While you need some options for unusual situations, you don't need a LOT. I wore the same dress to Mother's Day brunch every year for about 5 years. ;-) But that was often the only time I'd wear it that year. Getting rid of excess options is wonderfully freeing. I am embarrassed to say that between my husband and I, we donated 21 garbage bags of clothing. Some with the tags still on.
