Sounds similar to the classic wisdom of The Artist's Way. You have to fill up your reservoir, in order for there to be reserves to use in creation. It's possible to have short bursts of amazing productivity -- I once wrote a 90,000 novel in 6 weeks while working full time. But that deadline-driven level of output is not sustainable long-term.
