One of the best writing exercises I was ever given involved a memory that evoked a strong emotion. Write that memory. Then, pick the opposite emotion, and create a character who could experience the exact same events, but feel the opposite emotion. It really opened me up to the understanding of what deep point of view MEANS. It's not enough to describe what your character sees/hears/does. You have to describe how they feel about it. Without cheating (no omniscient narrator voiceover). Otherwise, the reader may have a different reaction than you expect.
