There's no point to "staying and fighting" if you have no hope of winning. We've chosen to help create social and economic models that can scale up to help "back home". By implementing them here, and showing they work, maybe they'll be able to make a difference there. So we're actually still "fighting", just from a different location.

And honestly, judging from your work, that's what you're doing, too! You're not abandoning the other people still trapped in the system. You're getting yourself out so you can show as many of them as you can how they can also get out. As the airlines always lecture, you're putting your own mask on before helping others.
