Lol. When I crack the Google algorithm, they’ll just change it again. Glad you’re finding my articles useful. If you read Medium’s official description of the retroactive payments, there’s a lot of hand-waving. So they have some space to adjust what’s going on under the covers. The gist of it is, if someone converts to a paid subscriber within 30 days of when they read your article, you get paid for the read time, as if the person was a regular reader, even though your read time stats don’t change. But there’s also this other mystery bonus that you get, which involves how many stories of yours the person read versus how many stories in Medium overall that they read, and probably phases of the moon or something equally esoteric. Because I’ve also received like $.20 for a new reader. Best I can figure, you get more if yours is the article that pulled them into the Medium ecosystem. But Medium keeps the exact algorithm used to calculate the payment under wraps.
