It's not that great to live there. My brother went to school for preservation architecture in Florida, and their summer program had all the students up on Nantucket, learning to document and preserve the houses that were being listed for the historical register. (He spent the summer measuring all of the windows in the house. Every single window was a different size. But his job was much more interesting than the student who had to take core samples of the walls to determine the original color of paint for each of the rooms.) It's great fun for the first few weeks, and then you discover, you've done everything the island has to offer (that you can afford). So unless your preferred pasttimes are those that involve sitting with a group of people talking or doing handcrafts, or being out on the ocean, you'll probably go bonkers pretty quickly.
