It's far better to be spiritual (believing in something greater than yourself, and the contemplation of which inspires you to make yourself and your world better) than it is to be religious (following a specific set of rules and regulations dictated by a formal hierarchy). In general, the common rules across religions are good ideas (e.g. don't kill people and take their stuff) if you ignore all the qualifiers the religions put on (e.g. unless they're heathens, infidels, witches, occupying our holy city, etc.).
