It's because of how our brains encode memories. You don't have conscious access to memories that are preverbal. But they are encoded in muscle memories. And, if you went over the memories with your parents after you were verbal, you have a memory of a memory that you can consciously access. How lovely that they reinforced a memory with you that they knew was meaningful to you.
