I was at a romance writer's convention (so probably 95% female) and the MC was reading the name of someone who had won a door prize... Dick Stiffey. After some hesitation, she announced, "Is there a Dick Sty-fee here? Richard Sty-fee?" Then she crumpled it up and said, "Prank entry." Around 15 minutes later a guy comes up to her and says, "I'm Dick Stiffy. Did I win something?"

Those parents were just CRUEL. And I have no idea why he didn't go by Rich or Rick or some other variant on Richard.
