I routinely see a pain-management specialist who is able to treat with deep massage and tissue manipulation what traditional doctors think needs surgery to repair. I spent well over a year progressively losing function from thumb to wrist to elbow to shoulder. Surgery was recommended, with no more than 80% likelihood of repairing the problem, and with 30% likelihood of permanently damaging the arm. He was able to restore full range of motion, and completely alleviate the pain (so intense, if anyone even brushed my arm with a piece of paper, I'd burst into tears). No surgery necessary. When I tore my rotator cuff a few years later, I saw him immediately. More people need to know this is an option, and not just blindly accept the recommendation for surgery. Great job on getting the word out!
