I had a similar reaction to first exposure. I got John and Yoko's Double Fantasy album in 1980, just after it was released. While I loved his songs on the album, hers were confusing, discordant, and unpleasant to listen to. Many years later, after absorbing 80s and 90s pop, I re-listened to her parts of the album. I heard music that anticipated Madonna and the other female vocalists who sang about things other than falling in love, or breaking up. Their relationships to men, rather than being the purpose and definition of their life, were given context by the other elements of their life. It was eye-opening, and showed just how ahead of her time Yoko was.
