I do like the new layout. The one exception is the section that spreads the width of the page, when all the others are width of the margins. (If you need to use that to get enough articles showing, how about putting it first?) It just looks weird. But I like getting the images for all the newest articles. That's much better than just a headline with a tiny little thumbnail.
