I did something similar for my fiction. If I tried to outline everything in advance, it ended up being crap. Too formulaic. But if I left it vague, I'd find totally cool and unexpected things while researching. Like thunderboats. The best results came from mixing a niche (romance or fantasy) with the specific new and different.
