I could totally see this. The relationship between Merryl and your Asian father didn't work out, and the racist judge presiding over their divorce awarded custody to the father (against the tradition of giving mothers anywhere from 50-100% custody) because he thought you belonged with the parent you "looked like". Merryl didn't know this was the reason, and thought you'd asked to live with your father, which is why you are estranged.
