Here's a fun anecdote for you. LMAlcott didn't invent a fun new word for a mother. She was writing colloquial pronunciation. That's how you pronounce Mommy in that regional dialect. Someone on a radio program I was listening to was using it (and some Mark Twain) as examples of when writing how something sounds phonetically is more confusing than helpful for the reader
