Great essay, and an interesting take on the responsibilities of the educator facing expectations of being "woke". Too often, it seems like "woke" equates to platitudes and judgments. I was at my friend's house the other day, and she said something about not liking China. Her son piped up with, "Stop Asian hate!" (A "woke" platitude.) She immediately responded with, "We're a conservative household. Stop sounding like a Libtard!" (Okay, that's the absolute opposite of being "woke".) I thought that was a great teaching moment lost -- explaining that you can love and value Chinese people for our shared humanity, while still disliking the government, programs, and ideals of the country.
