I read a research study about happiness that found that in countries where people define happiness in terms of relationships, trying to make themselves happier worked, because the actions they took were to do things for others that they loved. In countries where people define happiness in terms of personal feelings (like the US), trying to make themselves happier made them miserable. Because the very act of asking themselves, "Does this make me happy?" took them out of the moment, reducing their happiness!
