Coming from a devout Catholic background, my family's view at the time was that God wanted John Paul II in office, so that he could make sweeping changes. But the papacy of John Paul I was needed first, to get the church to where it needed to be so that he could be elected. That his papacy lasted for only a little longer than a month just showed how quickly he was able to turn the ship.
