Classic narcissism. My husband was in the hospital, literally fighting for his life. Not only did his mother only come to see him once during that time (apparently, "your son is in the ICU" meant she had to visit once to preserve appearances), but when she called him up, wanting him to do something for her, she was shocked that he was still in the hospital and unable to help her. I got the distinct impression she thought he was lollygagging, and if he'd really wanted to get up and come to her, he could. So his remaining in the hospital was entirely because he didn't want to help her. Not because, you know, he'd been deathly ill or anything.
