As long as both sides understand, no worries. It's one (just one) of the reasons Europeans think Americans are rude, though. We ask how they are, or how their day's going, then find an excuse to run away when the person actually answers!
It was included in the standard IBM cultural training for people visiting the US from our overseas divisions. Our training when going overseas included not asking what the price of something was in "real money", and avoiding the gestures for okay (either thumbs up or the circle with thumb and forefinger) or peace, as they meant a variety of offensive or inflammatory things.
