After I got laid off, that's what I did, too! The difference between a data analyst and a data scientist is that the data analyst asks "What" and the data scientist asks "Why". (The data engineer asks "How".) I think you're already well-aligned with the mind-set necessary to succeed in data science.
Your 4-part solution is very thorough. I'd suggest a 5th part, though... revisit. After you set your sights on a particular goal, and your feet on the path leading there, revisit both the path and the goal after a reasonable amount of time (year/half-year/quarter...month probably isn't long enough). Is the path still the best way of reaching your goal? Is the goal still the best solution to your problem?
