Actually, having a ship's cat tends to cause more problems than it solves. Because, sure, they can catch and kill rats or mice. But once they've done that, and they're bored, they start getting into places that were never designed for cats. Modern vessel engine rooms, for example, are not hospitable to cats. And the cat's fur is not good for the machinery.
