Actually, according to the science, if you haven't been "exercising" your skills at trying to find and take advantage of opportunities, if someone DOES hand you one, you're more likely to fail to take advantage of it. Because as soon as the situation changes -- and situations always change -- you won't be able to change to meet the new situation. So it's risky, not just because you're depending on someone else to give you your opportunity, which may never happen, but because you're likely to do poorly with that opportunity once you get it.
